Over 20 miles of existing motorway are currently being widened, and the programme includes proposals to widen a further 605 miles.

The emphasis of the national road programme is on relieving congestion on the broad routes followed by the present motorways which have by far the heaviest traffic flows and are the backbone of Britain's road system.
