§ 118. Mr. BatisteTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will publish figures showing the level of funding from central Government for tuition in musical instruments in schools(a) in each year since 1986 and (b) estimated funding for 1992.
§ Mr. EggarResources for tuition in musical instruments in schools are not separately identified within the funding which central Government provide to support16W local authority expenditure on education. It is for individual authorities and schools to decide how much to allocate for this purpose from their budgets.
§ Mr. BatisteTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will take measures to ensure that school curricula dealing with music lessons are not limited to the theory and appreciation of music but also provide equal emphasis on practical tuition in musical instruments.
§ Mr. EggarIn August, my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Education and Science and for Wales published their proposals for music for ages 5 to 14. In England, these proposals were the subject of a consultation exercise undertaken by the National Curriculum Council, whose advice is due to be submitted by 20 December.
