To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of employment in manufac-turing was lost in the Coventry area from May 1979 to the latest convenient date; how many jobs that represents; and what has been the change in employment levels so far in 1991.

The earliest and most recent estimates of employment in local areas are from the censuses of employment for September 1981 and September 1989. Between those dates, the number of employees in employment in manufacturing in the Coventry local authority district fell by 19,900 or 29 per cent.
