To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many kidney transplant operations were carried out under the NHS in 1978 and in the latest year for which figures are available.

According to information provided by the United Kingdom Transplant Support Service Authority the number of cadaveric kidney transplants carried out in the United Kingdom in 1978 was 849, compared with 1,730 in 1990, the latest year for which figures are available. This represents an increase of 104 per cent.
