To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many(a) heart bypass and (b) heart transplant operations were carried out under the NHS in 1978 and in the latest year for which figures are available.

The number of coronary artery bypass grafts performed in the United Kingdom in 1978 was 3,190(a) compared with an estimated 14,543 (b) in 1990–91, the latest year for which figures are available. According to information provided by the United Kingdom Transplant Support Service Authority, three heart transplants were carried out in 1979, the first year for which figures were collected, and 329 in 1990, the latest year for which figures are available. (a) Figures provided by the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons. (b) Figures based on outturn reports in England, Scotland and Wales for 1990–91 and in Northern Ireland for 1989–90.
