HC Deb 29 April 1991 vol 190 c20W
44. Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the Lord President of the Council how many people are currently employed in the Palace of Westminster; how many were employed five, 10 and 15 years ago; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. MacGregor

The House of Commons Commission employs 1,032 staff. A further 1,100 are employed by Members. In addition 7,976 photo identity pass holders are currently entitled to access to the House. These include police and security staff, Department of the Environment personnel, Government Department officials, and others.

Comparative figures for five, 10 and 15 years ago in respect of House of Commons staff are 964, 879 and 550 respectively. Meaningful figures for the other categories of pass holders for those years are not readily available.
