HC Deb 29 April 1991 vol 190 c19W
32. Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the right hon. Member for Selby, representing the Church Commissioners, how much financial help the Church Commissioners have provided to churches, abbeys and cathedrals in each of the past three years; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alison

The commissioners' primary responsibility is the support of the clergy and their funds are not generally available for churches. However, they provided approximately £900,000 in 1987, £1.8 million in 1988 and £2.5 million in 1989 towards church buildings, either under specific legislative authority or to meet legal obligations to do with land ownership.
