§ Mr. HinchliffeTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps are taken by his Department to monitor the performance of individual vehicle testing stations.
§ Mr. ChopeMOT testing stations are authorised only if the examiner is of good repute and provides the required level of premises and equipment. All testers must attend a course run by the vehicle inspectorate and pass a test of competence. Performance of testing stations is monitored by regular inspections by the vehicle inspectorate, at least once a year and more frequently if sub-standard performance is suspected. Motorists have a right of appeal against the refusal of a testing station to issue a test certificate. The vehicle inspectorate also makes incognito visits to testing stations; follows up complaints about stations; and checks vehicles at the roadside. Sub-standard performance can and does result in withdrawal of authorisation to test.
§ Mr. HinchliffeTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport if individual vehicle testing stations are permitted to sell vehicles that they themselves have tested.
