§ Mr. Denzil DaviesTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what percentage of the total annual income of local government in(a) the United Kingdom, (b) France and (c) Germany is raised through local taxation.
§ Mr. Mellor[holding answer 22 April 1991]: Comparative figures for the income received by local government are published in "OECD National Accounts 1976–88" (volume II). The balance of taxation will be affected by, among other things, the different constitutional position of local authorities, and different allocation of functions to local government, in the different countries.
