To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what plans he has to deploy British armed forces to protect the population of southern Iraq.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

The United Kingdom has contributed a 20-strong contingent to the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait observation mission, which will operate in the demilitarised zone along the Iraq-Kuwait border. There are no other plans to deploy British forces into southern Iraq.
