HC Deb 25 April 1991 vol 189 cc514-5W
Mr. Atkinson

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he has any plans to recommend to health authorities a system of booked admissions to hospitals to replace waiting lists for operations; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The Department has long recommended that health authorities use booked admissions wherever possible. Currently, 17 per cent. of patients waiting for admission have a firm date booked for their treatment. The South Western regional health authority is developing a region-wide admissions booking system. The Department and health regions are following progress with great interest with a view to wider application in the NHS.
