HC Deb 25 April 1991 vol 189 cc522-3W
Mr. Mills

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he has received representations concerning the number of cars likely to fail the revised MOT due to unacceptable exhaust emissions; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Chope

The majority of representations offered strong support for the check. At present, some 40 per cent. of cars fail annual MOT tests, and this percentage will probably increase following the introduction of the emissions check. But the number of cars which actually fail will depend upon how many motorists have their engine tuning checked before the MOT test.
