HC Deb 25 April 1991 vol 189 cc528-9W
Dr. David Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list the area in acres and hectares, the number of sheep, and the number of farms currently under restriction, including the county or counties involved, as a result of the radioactive contamination following the Chernobyl accident.

Mr. Hanley

The information is as follows:

Mr. Hanley

Two persons have been successfully prosecuted for the illegal administration of clenbuterol to cattle and three further prosecutions are pending. Thirteen kilos of the substance in powder form have been seized this year. The importation of unlicensed products such as clenbuterol into the United Kingdom is illegal. Inspectors of the Department of Health and Social Services work closely with HM Customs and Excise and the RUC in seizing illicit supplies and arranging for the subsequent prosecution of offenders. It should be noted that any animal presented for slaughter with traceable and unjustified levels of clenbuterol will be condemned and destroyed.
