HC Deb 23 April 1991 vol 189 c408W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he is satisfied with the qualifications of teachers in Wales who take classes in the physical sciences.

Sir Wyn Roberts

I am pleased that the latest secondary school staffing survey showed that, taken together, about 95 per cent. of teachers teaching biology, chemistry and physics at GCSE level have a qualification in that subject or in a related science subject. At A-level, at least 95 per cent. have a qualification in the science subject they teach.

I wish to see an improvement and that is why we have widened the scope of the shortage subject bursary scheme to include all sciences and thus attract more science teachers into the profession.
