HC Deb 23 April 1991 vol 189 c413W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether there are any proposals to create a safe haven for the Christian peoples of south Sudan.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

We have no such plans. Our efforts are directed instead towards averting the impending famine in Sudan through the despatch of substantial amounts of humanitarian aid and to urging on both sides in the long-running civil war the need to settle their differences. We wish to see all religious communities in Sudan play a full part in the country's affairs. This would involve the Government of Sudan providing adequate safeguards for Christians living in the south of the country.
