To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many people from the island of Mauritius resided in the United Kingdom at the last available date.

Mr. Dorrell

The estimated number of people born in Mauritius but resident in the United Kingdom is 22,000. This estimate has been derived by averaging the results of the 1987, 1988, and 1989 labour force surveys.
