HC Deb 22 April 1991 vol 189 c296W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will list those sporting activities which are required to pay for policing costs;

(2) if he will make it his policy for fox hunts to pay for the costs of policing their activities; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Police functions are carried out at public expense under the Police Act 1964; where special policy services—outside their normal functions—are provided, a charge may be made under section 15 of the Act, but this is at the discretion of the police authority concerned. Eligibility for charging depends on the nature of the police function, not the sport or other activity concerned.
