HC Deb 22 April 1991 vol 189 c306W
Mr. Speller

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many complaints he has received about the use of petroleum coke in domestic fireplaces; whether the sulphur emissions of this fuel conform to the recommended levels; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Leigh

[holding answer 18 April 1991]: My Department has received representations from 13 organisations seeking controls on the supply of petroleum coke for domestic use. We have received very few complaints from users of this fuel.

The maximum sulphur content of fuels authorised for use in smoke control areas is 2 per cent. I understand that some varieties of petroleum coke have a higher sulphur content.
