To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what plans there are to update the manual of environmental appraisal to include the issues raised by the European Community's directive on environmental assessment; and if he intends to consult outside organisations on this matter.

Mr. Chope

It is a measure of the comprehensiveness of the manual of environmental appraisal that no changes were necessary to implement in full the European Council directive on environmental assessment (85/337/EEC).
