HC Deb 19 April 1991 vol 189 c287W
Mr. Alfred Morris

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action he is taking or will be taking to assist Nigel Bramble, aged 14 years and severely handicapped, from the 13ritish dependency of Montserrat, to complete his schooling in the United Kingdom before returning with his mother to the dependency; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Nigel Bramble is currently studying at a state school which has the facilities to cater for his special educational and medical needs. His mother has applied to regularise their immigration status. We have been in touch with the Home Office. Given the circumstances surrounding the case, they have given an assurance that we would not seek to remove Nigel Bramble and his mother from the United Kingdom. l have asked my officials to discuss this with officials of the Home Office, the Department of Education and the Department of Health.

Mr. Alfred Morris

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if appropriate provision is available for Nigel Bramble, aged 14 years and severely handicapped, born in the British dependency of Montserrat, to complete his schooling in the dependency if he is forced to return there from the United Kingdom.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

There is a school for children with special needs in Montserrat, which Nigel Bramble attended until June 1990. It is, however, the view of local and visiting British medical consultants that the school has nothing further to offer Nigel, given its limited resources.
