§ Mr. WorthingtonTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how vacation hardship allowance is calculated.
§ Mr. Michael ForsythThe vacation hardship allowance may be used to provide student maintenance outwith term time in certain defined circumstances. Its maximum value is broadly similar to the additional weeks allowance for students on courses with extended terms and in recent 247W years this has been increased to reflect the movement in student maintenance rates generally. The amount actually payable in any individual case depends on the circumstances of the applicant.
On 27 March, my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Education and Science announced that, subject to the approval of the necessary regulations, the equivalent discretionary allowance would be discontinued in England and Wales. Those regulations come into force on 17 April and I can confirm that it is our intention to discontinue this allowance in Scotland also.
