To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list those grants under the physical and social environment programme which have been allocated to(a) Irish cultural activities and (b) British cultural activities; if both sections of the community are benefiting from this programme; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Mawhinney

The physical and social environment programme makes provision for a sub-programme under the broad heading of community reconciliation. The overall aim of the sub-programme is to encourage greater mutual understanding and respect for different cultural traditions, and to promote greater contact between the different communities in Northern Ireland. Within the sub-programme there are five measures:

  • Cross-community contact
  • Community relations council
  • Cultural traditions
  • District councils
  • Education

The programme is for the period up to December 1993 with European regional development fund support of £9 million towards gross expenditure of £12 million.
