Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) how many speech therapists are currently employed by local health authorities;

(2) if he will list (a) the number of speech therapists and (b) the ratio of speech therapists per 100,000 of population in the regional health authorities' planning proposals for each year from 1989 to 1994.

There were 2,810 speech therapists employed by the national health service in England at 30 September 1989. Details of the ratio of speech therapists per 100,000 of population in the regional health authorities' planning proposals for each year from 1990 to 1994 are not available centrally. The ratio as at 30 September 1989, by English region is shown in the table.
