§ Mr. CryerTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's policy towards claims by British ex-prisoners of war for compensation against the Japanese Government for injury suffered during the 1939–1945 war.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydThe question of compensation for the sufferings of former British prisoners of war of Japan was settled in the 1951 treaty of peace with Japan. We received a total of £4,816,473 from the Japanese Government, which was paid to claimants in instalments between 1952 and 1956. The level of compensation was less than we would have wished, but it was agreed by the allied powers that the Japanese Government had fully discharged their obligations.
