To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what are his Department's projections of the change in the average fuel efficiency of cars between 1991 and 1996.

Mr. Chope

Improvements in the fuel efficiency of vehicles that have occurred in past years are now increasingly reflected in the overall vehicle fleet. The Government do not make projections of fuel economy for vehicles. Such improvements will depend on motorists' demands for more fuel-efficient vehicles and on the ability of manufacturers to respond.
