To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the number of pollution incidents on United Kingdom rivers caused by industrial processes in 1990 and the number of prosecutions that were made as a result of these incidents.

This information is not available in the form requested. However, details of pollution incidents and prosecutions during 1989–90 are contained in the annual report of the National Rivers Authority for that period, a copy of which is in the Library.

Water pollution control in Scotland and Northern Ireland are matters for my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
