HC Deb 31 October 1990 vol 178 c543W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list each centre of population covered by the Yorkshire water company which receives drinking water which is in breach of European Community nitrate limits.

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

Out of 191 supply zones, Yorkshire Water Services Ltd. has only five zones in which action to control nitrate levels is necessary. Even in these cases the breaches of the EC nitrates limit have been intermittent. These were Ackworth, Goole, Isle of Axholme, Pontefract and Selby. All supplies will comply with the EC limit by 1995 at the latest and those which do not meet the standard in the interim are not considered to endanger health.
