HL Deb 30 October 1990 vol 522 cc1835-6WA
Lord Clinton-Davis

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action will be contemplated if the Westminster and Charing Cross Hospitals fail to break even by the end of the current financial year.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Baroness Hooper)

The budgetary performance of the Westminster and Charing Cross Hospitals is a matter for Riverside Health Authority.

Lord Clinton-Davis

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What effect on patients is being caused by the serious curtailment of facilities at the Westminster and Charing Cross Hospitals.

Baroness Hooper

The further bed closures will reduce the capacity of both hospitals to undertake elective admissions. Priority will be given to emergency admissions, cancer cases, HIV/AIDS, terminations of pregnancy and elective day cases.

Lord Clinton-Davis

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps are being taken to train registrars at the Westminster and Charing Cross Hospitals consequent upon the steps taken at those hospitals to reduce expenditure.

Baroness Hooper

The Riverside Health Authority is ensuring that the steps taken to control expenditure will leave sufficient beds open for the needs of medical education, including that of registrars.

Lord Clinton-Davis

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What representations they have received concerning the closure (except for emergencies and cancer treatment) of the Westminster and Charing Cross Hospitals for six months as from 15th October 1990, and what has been their response to such representations.

Baroness Hooper

In addition to the noble Lord's series of Questions for Written Answers we have received letters from Members of Parliament and four Parliamentary Questions have been tabled in another place. Responsibility for the provision of services at Westminster and Charing Cross Hospitals rests with Riverside Health Authority.
