HC Deb 23 October 1990 vol 178 c165W
Mr. Pawsey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was education spending per pupil in 1990–91, 1984–85 and 1979–80; and if he will set out the figures by reference to primary schools and secondary schools.

Mr. Fallon

The latest available figures on outturn recurrent spending in schools relate to 1988–89. The table shows school-based spending per pupil in that year, compared with spending in 1979–80 and 1984–85. The spending returns group nursery schools with primary schools.

Nursery and primary Secondary
£ £
1979–80 430 605
1984–85 765 1,085
1988–89 1,100 1,690

The figures are in cash terms. They do not include spending on central LEA services such as transport and administration, or any capital spending.
