HC Deb 23 October 1990 vol 178 cc162-3W
83. Mr. Jessel

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has on trends in educational standards in outer London boroughs.

Mr. Eggar

The following table indicates trends in public examination results for school leavers in the outer London boroughs since 1982. The national curriculum assessment system, when fully in place at all key stages, will, when combined with improved methods of collecting and reporting data on examination results, provide a fuller and more accurate picture.

Notes:

A large proportion of 1+ A-level achievers are also counted in 5+ grades A-C/1.

Richmond-upon-Thames provides all A-level teaching through a tertiary system. Other local education authorities have adopted alternative modes of tertiary provision and this may well have a bearing on A-level figures.

The above data is based on a 10 per cent. survey. Since figures from small local education authorities are subject to relatively large levels of sampling error, figures are taken over a three year period.
