HC Deb 23 October 1990 vol 178 c162W
76. Mr. Sumberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will take steps to ban the use of typewriter correcting fluid and other similar toxic substances in school classrooms.

Mr. Fallon

Many substances which have useful applications in schools may be toxic if they are misused. For this reason the national curriculum requires that all young people should be educated about the dangers of solvent and other substance misuse in science and technology; and the Department of Education and Science has issued guidance to LEAs and schools on the safe handling of volatile substances. My right hon. Friend has no powers to take further steps.
