HC Deb 22 October 1990 vol 178 cc18-9W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the longest time any prisoner has been imprisoned on remand(a) in the last 30 years, (b) in the last 20 years and (c) in the last 10 years.

Mrs. Rumbold

Information about the longest periods held in remand during the last 30 years is not available centrally. On 30 June 1990 one unconvicted prisoner had been held in Pentonville prison for more than four and a half years having been committed to custody pending completion of extradition proceedings. An indication of the length of time spent in prison service establishments by person received on remand is published annually in "Prison Statistics England and Wales"—tables 2.3 and 2.4 of the latest issue, for 1989, Cm. 1221, copies of which are in the Library.
