To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what discussions he has had recently with British Rail and European Transport Ministers concerning rail transport in the east midlands; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. McLoughlin

We are keen to see good rail transport throughout the country. It is for British Rail to develop any specific proposals for further improvements in the east midlands.
