HL Deb 22 October 1990 vol 522 c1232WA
Lord Fanshawe of Richmond

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many military and civilian personnel are operating with the "BRIXMIS" mission in the former German Democratic Republic; where the headquarters are; what the name of the commanding officer is; what plans have been made for its future role; and what the overall position is, and what the future plans are for "BRIXMIS" and the Soviet mission in the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States and French missions operating in the former German Democratic Republic.

The Earl of Arran

The former British Military Mission to the Soviet Western Group of Forces in East Germany (BRIXMIS) ceased its activities on 2nd October, with the suspension of Four Power rights and responsibilities upon German unification. We are looking, with the Germans and our other allies, at the possibilities for alternative liaison arrangements which would enable us to maintain contact with the Western Group of Forces of the Soviet Union.
