§ Mr. WaldegraveSyria is an important regional power with whom we would like to have normal relations, but this does depend on resolving the problems which led to the breach in relations in 1986. We welcome President Assad's decision to send troops to the Gulf in support of the international effort to defend Saudi Arabia and help restore the legitimate government of Kuwait.
