HL Deb 16 October 1990 vol 522 c880WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether any action followed a call from Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen and Syria last April for the banning of nuclear and chemical weapons in the Middle East.

The Earl of Caithness

President Mubarak proposed a Middle East Zone Free from Weapons of Mass Destruction in April and his Foreign Minister wrote to the UN Secretary General on 16th April with details of the proposal. We welcomed the proposal as a contribution to lowering tensions in the area. We shall continue to pursue controls on nuclear and chemical weapons through the respective international fora. We understand that the Egyptians are considering how to take their initiative forward.
