HL Deb 08 October 1990 vol 522 c135WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Following the answer of Lord Brabazon of Tara on 24th July, whether they now perceive the European Community as a state rather than a group of co-operating sovereign nations.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (The Earl of Caithness)

No. The status of the European Community is set out in the Treaties, from which it is clear that the EC does not constitute a state.
