What are the latest statistics available relating to the population of grey and common seals around the coasts of (a) England and Wales and (b) Scotland.

The latest figures, based on surveys carried out by the Sea Mammals Research Unit in 1990, are as follows:

England and Wales Scotland
Grey Seals 7,000 79,000
Common Seals 2,000 120,000
