§ Lord Mottistoneasked Her Majesty's Government:
How many patients, and of them how many with schizophrenia, were discharged from mental illness hospitals in 1975, 1980, 1985 and 1987–88 indicating in each year: (a) numbers after first admission; and (b) numbers after a readmission with sub-headings, (i) in total; (ii) in less than one month; (iii) in less than three months; (iv) after six months or more but less than one year; (v) after one year or more but less than two years. (vi) after two years.
§ Baroness HooperThe table shows the estimated number of discharges from the National Health Service hospitals (excluding the special hospitals) and units in the United Kingdom, and the number of those discharges with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The 43WA figures include deaths and transfers to other hospitals, and do not relate to the number of patients, since the same individual may be readmitted and discharged more than once during a year. The figures for discharges are split between first admissions and readmissions to a psychiatric ward. Information is not collected centrally to enable a reply under the sub-headings specified.
Comparative figures for 1987–88 are not available.
