§ 31. Mr. Barry FieldTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he is taking to assist United Kingdom citizens who were born in Poland to return to Poland.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggBritish citizens of Polish extraction are free to return to Poland if they wish. There are no schemes to help with the cost of returning and we have no plans to introduce one.
§ Mr. Harry GreenwayTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on relations between the United Kingdom and Poland.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggWe have close and friendly relations with Poland. We were delighted to welcome Prime Minister Mazowiecki to the United Kingdom in February. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs himself visited Poland at the end of April and many other Cabinet Ministers have done so, too. We admire the courage with 431W which the Polish Government are tackling their economic problems and will continue to give substantial help to ease the smooth transition to democracy and a market-based economy.
