HC Deb 23 November 1990 vol 181 c252W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will seek to persuade the signatories to the Antarctic treaty to institute controls on the quantities of krill removed from Antarctic waters.

Mr. Garel-Jones

Fishing in Antarctic waters is controlled by the convention on the conservation of Antarctic marine living resources (CCAMLR). Since 1980 CCAMLR has applied catch restrictions on certain fish stocks in Antarctica, and has closed some areas to protect depleted stocks. CCAMLR has been successful in achieving protection of the most threatened species and we shall continue to work towards reaching an agreement to limit krill catches in Antarctic waters.
