HC Deb 22 November 1990 vol 181 c172W
Mr. Madel

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether, during the construction of the Leighton Linslade southern bypass by Bedfordshire county council, he will agree to an access from the Totternhoe Lime and Stone Company to the bypass; whether such an access is permitted within the existing guidelines; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Chope

The Leighton Linslade southern bypass will ultimately form part of the east-west route referred to in the White Paper "Roads for Prosperity". This will be a major strategic route from the M40 to the east coast ports.

The Secretary of State would not wish to see a direct access from the Totternhoe Lime and Stone Company on to the bypass for reasons of safety and because it would restrict the free flow of traffic.

Existing guidelines indicate that such accesses should be restricted in the interests of traffic and safety.
