To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many jobs in manufacturing have been lost since 1979; and if he will make a statement.

The net job losses in manufacturing in Scotland between 1979 and 1989 totalled 210,700. This figure should be regarded as provisional, as it may change when more data become available.

The table shows a components of change analysis of jobs in the manufacturing industry in Scotland between 1979 and 1989. The net loss of 210,700 includes 187,000 due to plant closures; 124,800 due to plant contraction; 58,400 new jobs due to plant openings; and 42,700 due to plant expansions.
