§ Mrs. Virginia BottomleyThe number of NHS sight tests paid for by family health services authorities (formally family practitioner committees) in England and Wales between 1 April 1989 and 31 March 1990 was 5.572 million.
This figure includes approximately 1.7 million sight tests which were carried out before 1 April 1989 but paid for after that date.
