HC Deb 14 November 1990 vol 180 cc176-7W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what has been the total expenditure by Her Majesty's Government upon the health education programme relating to AIDS in each of the last five years for which figures are available; and what is the total expenditure estimated to be in the current financial year.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The table shows spending since 1985–86 by the Department of Health and the Health Education Authority (HEA) on the development of the national AIDS public education campaign, including the running costs of the national AIDS helpline and related telephone information and advice services. The HEA assumed responsibility for the further development of the campaign in October 1987. The HEA has built on the success the campaign has achieved in raising levels of public awareness and knowledge of the risks of HIV infection. The HEA plans to launch the next phase of the mass media campaign in early December. This will focus on increasing individual perception of the risks of HIV transmission. Not shown in the table are the sums spent by other interested Government Departments on I-IIV prevention work.

The table also sets out total allocations to regional health authorities, local authorities and to the voluntary sector as a contribution towards the development of HIV and AIDS-related services, including the development, of local HIV prevention initiatives. We have also asked each district to appoint an HIV prevention co-ordinator to spearhead this important aspect of authorities'remit and draw together the work of agencies in the statutory and voluntary sectors.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton
