Mr. Beith

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will show the total public expenditure on transport broken down by standard economic planning region in England for the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Chope

A breakdown by region is available only for roads expenditure. The information is as follows:

Routine maintenance: verge maintenance, sweeping, gullies, signals, signs and markings.
Winter maintenance: salting, snow clearance and snow fences.
3 Public lighting: maintenance and energy.
4 Includes expenditure on technical surveys.
