HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 c671W
Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is Her Majesty's Government's response to the proposal of the Italian Foreign Minister that European Community members spend 1 per cent, of gross domestic product annually to support developing countries.

Mrs. Chalker

The Italian Foreign Minister suggested in July 1990 that 1 per cent, of GDP be spent on economic assistance, with one quarter of it going to eastern Europe, one quarter to the Mediterranean countries and one half to the developing countries in general. He has not pursued the idea further with the British Government.
