HC Deb 24 May 1990 vol 173 c322W
Mr. John D. Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many of the 28 members of the Ulster Defence Regiment who were arrested during an operation on 9 October 1989 have been charged with firearms offences; and what form of apology has been given to those who were not charged.

Mr. Cope

All police operations in the Province are the responsibility of the Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary and he has informed us that nine members of the Ulster Defence Regiment were charged with 11 firearms offences. I know of no apology issued to those who were not charged.

Mr. John D. Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what statements were issued following the arrest of 28 Ulster Defence Regiment soldiers on 9 October 1989; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Cope

I understand that 25 members of the Ulster Defence Regiment were arrested on 8 October 1990 and a further three on 9 October. Deputy Chief Constable Stevens issued a statement on 8 October and a further one on 13 October.
