HC Deb 24 May 1990 vol 173 cc339-43W
Mr. Janman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the population served of each district health authority; and how many accident and emergency centres each district has.

Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 11 May 1990]: The available information is given in the table.

Comparisons between district health authorities based on the number of accident and emergency departments per head of resident population may be misleading as factors such as the population density, the numbers of holidaymakers or workers coming into the district, and ready access to specialised services in adjacent districts are taken into account when planning services. Furthermore the heading "accident and emergency" includes departments offering a wide range of levels of service.
