§ Sir Charles MorrisonTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the total expenditure on population activities for each of the years 1989 and 1990; and what percentage this represents of total gross public expenditure on aid for each of the years 1989 and 1990.
179W
§ Mrs. ChalkerIn 1989, £17.275 million was spent on population activities: this figure represents 1 per cent. of total gross public expenditure on aid. Figures for 1990 are not yet available. In addition, aid spending on other programmes, including health care and education, especially that benefiting women, helps create the conditions for slowing down the rapid rate of population growth.
